Students are responsible for understanding the methods of instruction and appropriate sections available for enrollment. Class sections represent different instructional methods.

  • Section -01 enrolls students in the face to face class on Cal Poly’s campus.
  • Section -02 enrolls students in the online, synchronous class. Synchronous class participation means students are participating in the class during the scheduled meeting times.
  • Section -03 enrolls students in the online, asynchronous class. Registration in this section means that students are not able to attend during the scheduled meeting times either in person or online.

FPE S503: Flammability Assessment Methods

Characterization of flammability properties of gaseous, liquid and solid materials. Fire test methods for evaluating flammability properties of materials and burning characteristics of products. Overview of regulatory requirements for restricting the flammability of products and materials used in buildings.

FPE S522: Fire Detection, Alarm and Communication Systems

FPE S522 is intended to provide students with a detailed understanding of the engineering analysis and design of fire detection, alarm and communication systems, including requirements contained in current installation and approval standards. Topics addressed in this course include: analysis of the operating characteristics of different fire detection devices and alarm notification appliances, introduction to modern fire alarm systems and components, and introduction to mass communication systems.

FPE S554: Forensic Fire Analysis

Introduction to the processes of fire investigation and reconstruction. Engineering analysis of structural and wildland fires. Identification of failure mechanisms in fire safety systems.
